About The Project

My photo
I have over 25 years of experience working in this field producing high quality, innovative, robust artworks that have stood the test of time. I understand and embrace the involvement of community groups and individuals in the development of creative ideas and the design processes of artworks to produce pieces that are sympathetic to their environments while giving the audience, participants and the local community a real sense of ownership.

Up to production day 9 & then pause!

The speed of the artwork is really hotting up, it is looking amazing and is getting a huge amount of positive feedback.  The apprentices are doing a sterling job and the team dynamic is incredible.
I want to keep you all in suspense and don't want to give too much away as to what the final piece is going to look like, so no more posts on here until the "Launch" on 12 June.
I will obviously add photos later to record the whole process, installation, celebration and launch so watch this space!!

 Production Day 9:
Waking up
A huge amount of progress has been made, the sculpture is really taking shape, awesome!  The peice is now 7.2 metres in length and starting to look alive.

 Production Day 8:

Really starting to see some difference in the development of the sculpture. Thanks again to Chris Slack for the amazing images. Well done team!

Nathan and Joss are working on the PR/marketing of the project, something they havent done before so quite a challenge. Ric is their training manager

Production: Week 4

Current Design, Thanks Connor Chessman who will be working on the CAD modelling and sculpture development from this point.

Production: Week 3
An excellent day, it is great to see the apprentices working so well as a team, teaching each other new skills and learning from each other.  We managed to bend all of the legs up (apart from the back two) and these are now in place ready for welding.  It is starting to take shape and already looks like it is coming to life.

The little one is running off!!

Sharing knowledge and experience

New techniques and skills picked up along the way

The Artist at work

Thanks to undergraduate Edwards Jones who has modeled the sculpture into a CAD system.  We can now work out the weight of the piece, look at where the stress points and loading pressures are.  We can also develop the look of the sculpture by adding, removing or refining areas. What a fantastic opportunity and a great way of finishing your 15 month placement with Sheffield Forgemasters, great Job Edward, thank you.

Production: Week 2

The group have separated into different teams, some are fabricating, some are designing and some are dealing with marketing and PR.  Each person is trying new techniques they wouldn't normally be involved in. It has been a a good day with the sculpture well underway.
In the pattern shop with Liam and Dom, this is the set out for a cast component

We had some great news,  we received confirmation on the 28 November that the sculpture was granted planning permission, this is going to be a reality!

Day 1: Production

On an early morning in January we started.  Two teams: one to gather materials from the scrap yard, the other in fabrication.  Led  by the skillful and well experienced supervisors we made a start.

15 November: Creative Workshop 3
I believe that we have a fully rounded team of apprentices now, however to push the dynamics further I have asked them to work together to re-create my scale model into a much larger piece: myself and Sara are to step back and observe how the team  work together; who takes a lead, who follows.

What an amazing team!
Now into production, phase two ................
